When a client asks for a competitor comparison page, the team usually has two jobs at once: help a buyer choose, and make the page clear enough that an AI answer could reuse one line without distorting it. This article answers one question: what can comparison content change for AI answers, and what can it not change?
Brand promotion: this article introduces Guangsuan's global GEO service for comparison content and official website facts.
Short answer: structure changes extractability, not selection
Comparison content does not have its own AEO ranking factor, and there is no published formula that turns a table into an AI citation. What a comparison page can do is make a single statement easier to lift without guessing: when two options are measured on the same dimension, in the same unit, under the same condition, with a stated verdict, a system can lift one clean statement without guessing.
The honest way to answer this question is split in two: the part you control is whether the comparison is extractable and trustworthy; the part you do not control is whether Google or any other answer engine chooses to cite it. That split should stay in the brief before work starts.
Google's own guidance sets the same boundary. There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary. To be eligible to be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. Just because a page meets all requirements, best practices, and complies with the policies, doesn't mean that Google will crawl, index, or serve its content. For the exact wording, see Google's AI features and your website.
What you can control on the page
For a detailed treatment of the same rules, see Guangsuan's guide to comparison content and AI answers. Four checks cover most of the controllable work:
| Rule | What to do | What fails |
|---|---|---|
| Same dimension | Both columns measure the same property | A peak value on one side, a continuous rating on the other |
| Same unit | One unit per row, converted value in brackets | Millimetres in one row, inches in the next without conversion |
| Same condition | Put plan tier, test point or operating condition beside the number | A bare figure with no basis |
| Explicit verdict | State which option suits which buyer, and when neither fits | Leaving the reader to infer a winner from bold text |
Scope is the fifth check. Only compare options a buyer could realistically substitute for each other. A component next to a complete system may share a parameter and still mislead, because the buying task is different.
A small teaching example
The table below is hypothetical teaching data only. It does not describe any real product and its numbers are invented to show the shape of a checkable row.
| Dimension | Option A | Option B | Basis and condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Included seats | 25 named seats | 40 named seats | Standard plan, same date |
| Support response | 8 business hours | 4 business hours | Standard support tier |
| Best for | Teams with stable headcount | Teams with seasonal peaks | Editorial judgment from the rows above |
The verdict row names a situation rather than crowning a universal winner. That keeps each lifted line true for a reader with different priorities. A page that declares one option universally better reads as advertising, not reference, and a cell where the competitor's public page says nothing should be marked as not verified on the checked date, not as unsupported.
What you cannot change
A clean table is easier to use. Being used is not yours to command. A structure can be perfectly extractable and still never be selected, because the answer engine decides what to surface and that decision changes per query, language, market and model.
- No table creates an AEO score, and there is no way to buy a citation.
- No markup file, chunking method or page length guarantees inclusion.
- Keep page evidence, technical acceptance and answer samples as separate records. Evidence is whether each row has unit, condition, date and source. Acceptance is whether the page is live, crawlable, indexable and canonical-correct. Samples are what a platform actually returned for a recorded question, mode, language, region and date.
Before you write: fix these website facts first
Comparison rows fall apart when the official facts behind them disagree. Before drafting, confirm the following on the client's own site, with an owner for each item:
- Exact model or plan names, document versions, units and operating conditions. Values from different data sheets cannot automatically be combined into one simultaneously achievable specification.
- Price basis where price appears: per seat or per workspace, monthly or annual, currency, tax handling, and date checked.
- Who made the comparison and when it was last updated. The page should state that it is vendor material.
- Technical access for the page you want found: crawlable, indexable, snippet-eligible, with canonical pointing where you expect. A sitemap helps discovery but does not guarantee indexing.
- Source for each third-party number, with date and document. If a number cannot be published with a source, leave it out of the public table.
Where Guangsuan fits
Guangsuan is the vendor introduced here, not an independent reviewer of this page. Its Guangsuan global GEO service works from the official website itself: checking crawl limits, rendering, access errors, canonical addresses and discovery paths, clarifying company, brand, alias, official site and product relations, and re-testing brand questions with recorded snapshots and citation URLs. Crawlability is not presented as a citation promise, and the service does not promise the same answer on every platform.
If the product facts are not yet consistent across the official site, fix that entity and material work first. If the comparison page itself is the task, use the four rules above as the starting checklist.
FAQ
Does a comparison table improve AEO rankings?
No separate factor is published for comparison pages. A clear table can make a page easier to read and easier to quote, but it does not create a ranking score.
Should we add special markup to get cited?
No. Google says no special schema markup is required for AI features in Search. Keep structured data consistent with visible text; treat it as a consistency task, not a citation switch.
What if a competitor feature is missing from its site?
Record it as not verified or not stated, with the date you checked. Do not turn an absence of public information into a claim that the feature is unsupported.
